This class is basically hands-on. Students will learn information from the book, and use it to perform labs and experiments. The chapter should be read throughout the duration of the 2-3 week period designated for each chapter. I will give notes 1 or 2 of the days and the test questions come directly from those notes. I will give a test for each chapter and sometimes a quiz. Most of the quizzes are announced and the tests are always announced at least a week before they are given. The
other days are spent doing labs, discussing results, and completing
worksheets and other activities to help understand the material. I give 1 project per quarter and they are completed in class.
Quarter 1 – atomic model
Quarter 2 – chemical equation in shoebox
Quarter 3 – musical instrument to demonstrate sound vocabulary
Quarter 4 – TBA
My expectations are pretty simple. The students should come prepared, bring completed homework (roughly 2-3 times per week), and be ready to listen and learn. We have many opportunities to have fun, but behavior is important. If
behavior becomes an issue, seat changes, calls home, calls to the
office, and/or detentions may occur. Labs involve chemicals and
glassware, which makes safety my main concern. We spend 2 full days discussing safety rules, regulations, and procedures. Each student and parent will sign a safety contract pledging to be careful. This will be followed to ensure that all students will be safe.
I look forward to a wonderful, educational, and fun-filled school year with your child.
Remember, teamwork is important! Let’s work together to make sure your child’s 7th grade year is a great one!!
Honors: higher level thinking skills adaptive to the same curriculum
